President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III made a sweeping indictment against the Marcos regime of Ferdinand E. Marcos who declared Martial Law in our country 40 years ago today on September 21, 1972. He said his father's death at the tarmac even before he could set forth his feet on Philippine soil from a trip abroad, was not the sole reason why we were able to reclaim our lost freedom from the brutal clutch of Marcos. In his emphatic and scathing remarks against the Marcos regime, he expressed his desire to instruct that the National Historical Commission should form a commission  "to make certain that the information we pass on to our children is based on true historical events. We wish to ensure that only the truth will be printed in the books of our students - not the collected lies of propagandist and not the deceitful clippings of the revisionists," he said. He added, "There is a saying: 'Those who forget the mistakes of the past are bound to repeat it.' Let us not allow our rights and freedom to ever be imperilled again. I will not bequeath the mistakes of history to the coming generations." Aquino said he wished to make it clear, "We won back our democracy not because of the assassination of my father. We reclaimed it because there were hundreds of heroes who committed to fight for the rights of those in the margins; because there are those who refuse to be enslaved by a dictator and instead stand up for the rights of their fellowmen; because there are many other martyrs who freed themselves from the chains of the Marcos regime, at the cost of their lives," he said. 

He also made a trip to Nueva Ecija in Fort Magsaysay to commemorate the time when his father was imprisoned there for 30 days. And he said the sacrifice his father had in that prison cell was only a small portion of the total sacrifices that he persevered in prison for a period of seven years and seven months before he finally died.
