SSS head defends bonuses; says everyone got them

The loud protests from SSS members about the highly "indecent way" with which SSS funds were "brutalized" by those who are entrusted to govern the Office is reverberating to the four corners of the country. Emilio de Quiros Jr., president and CEO of SSS disclosed that he and seven other members of the board received no less than P1M each as bonus. With P10M as their bonus, the additional amount of P276M was distributed to about 5,000 SSS employees. Viewed against this "wastage" incurred out of precious SSS funds (which is just wantonly distributed as bonus to already highly paid board members),  is the impending increase in membership contributions to start January 2014 next year which is intended to cover up the liabilities for the next 26 years until 2039.

Accordingly, SSS was able to post a net income of 36.2B in 2012 hence, their "justification" to declare huge bonus among themselves amid what seemed to be "cringing source of SSS funds" in view of what can be seen obviously in SSS offices across the country of its members queuing in long lines for their applied benefits. Other postings I read from one disgruntled SSS member who told about his mother who was receiving a monthly pension of only P1,500 a month from the system for 11 years until she died, an amount too little to defray her old age needs that without her children's help would not be able to reach that long. When P-Noy announced in 2012 that he would raise the minimum monthly pension of retirees to P5,000 a month to appropriately cover their basic needs like paying their water and light bills and for medicines, I was excited to get an increase in my SSS pension. But I noticed it did not materialize because I only received a slight increase of my monthly pension to P3,000 starting January 2013. I hope those officials manning the operation and financial well-being of SSS will be guided and enlightened to do what is needed for the system to successfully survive and to safeguard the SSS funds for benefits that will redound to the overall welfare of its members and not just to a selected few of the "controlling bigwigs."
