Why not make the people who, more or less,
were directly responsible for the fiasco be held responsible, instead of the
President? The people who, due to their wrong decisions and ineptness in
handling of that infamous botched Luneta hostage-taking situation resulted to
eight precious lives being snuffed out because of politics. Like former Mayor
Alfredo Lim and former DILG Usec. Rico Puno, aside from merely apologizing should
financially compensate the families of the victims who sent the Keystone Cops rather than the
well-trained SWAT teams to handle the crisis. After all, these two were the
ones giving the orders to the KC teams while cooped up inside the Emerald
Garden Restaurant feasting, ironically, on Chinese food. There's no dishonor in
apologizing especially if the situation calls for it. After all, admitting
one's mistakes is the hallmark of an honorable man, if these two consider
themselves honorable, in the truest sense of the word. Just asking...
D_BystandeR:
You got it right with your practical
assessment of who should bear the brunt of that lingering fiasco which took
place in Luneta three years ago that up to now even threatens the employment of
our domestic helpers in Hong Kong who are considered part of the group of our
OFWs hailed as our modern day heroes for supplying our country with the needed
financial remittance earnings in billions of dollars every year. But maybe we
should raise our focus not only to those two personalities, like former DILG
Usec. Rico Puno and Ex-Mayor Alfredo Lim who, like Emperor Nero of Rome was
said to be playing lyre while Rome was burning, the two aforementioned officials were feasting
on pakatable foods served inside that
Chinese restaurant while the eight Chinese tourists were dying in a hail of
bullets as a result of a bungled negotiation demanded by a Police Captain
Rolando Mendoza to be given "justice" to his case which was just allowed
to gather dust in the office of the Ombudsman. The exchange of words heard over the radio between
Capt. Mendoza and a certain Mr. Gonzales in the Ombudsman's office who was charged
by the former as having demanded a "big" sum of money to have his
case acted upon favorably and to which the latter vehemently denied (nobody
will accept that accusation in public) was the height of the hostage drama and
that because nothing concrete was achieved out of it the deaths of the Chinese
tourists followed. That office, which caused the police officer to lose his patience
should also be considered as part of those from whom the "blood
money" will be extracted to pave the way for a lasting solution for this
kind of controversy.
Footnote: If only the leaders of our
country whose presence in the area at that time were known to everybody had extensively
"pooled" their bright ideas together into considering the demand of
the disgruntled police officer, (he was expecting to retire in a few months'
time that's why he was deadly serious to be cleared of that "black
spot" in his employment file) they could have done something to diffuse the delicate situation involving
the lives of the Chinese tourists for the amount involved in his demand was not
"that great" compared to the repercussions that are now hounding the
minds and conscience of our "top honchos" of our country where the
Hong Kong lawmakers are now demanding compensation for the deaths of eight of
their compatriots and threatens the employment of our domestic helpers in Hong
Kong if we fall short of their demand as part of a "collateral
damage."
