Perhaps
the reason why God has placed in the hands of Pope Francis to lead the 2 billion
Catholics around the world is to open the eyes of the people that the world today
is much focused in obtaining material things for the comforts of the rich and,
consequently, putting beyond the reach of the poor any hope of future
breakthrough in their bottomless pit of miseries. Time and again, like a broken
record, Pope Francis has been reported giving announcement and exhortation to
national leaders around the world to take care of the poor. But it has sadly
fallen in deaf ears as shown by the recently approved Quezon City ordinance
empowering barangay officials to conduct drastic action against the poor sectors
of the communities known as informal settlers. If we try to analyze the
situation now obtaining in most parts of the country, it is the rich families
dominated by foreigners who now own a bigger portion of our landholdings
leaving nothing but crumbs to the poor and impoverished. This is the biggest joke
of a lifetime that because of government neglect and antipathy to consider the
lives of the poor wallowing in poverty, they are now treated treated like how
we treat to throw away or dispose of our garbage. We forget that these people
too are human beings like us and are worthy of our little consideration to
survive the harshness of life and enjoy the freedom to live with us, given our
due respect and concern for them to co-exist with us under the christian tenets
that we are supposed to observe and practice.

ordinance empowering barangay officials to take drastic action against informal
settlers in their respective areas. Said ordinance was to take effect 15 days
after its publication in a newspaper of general circulation.
