Kaban ni D_BystandeR: PAGKALARINONG MAMABA UG PAGKAUTOKAN, MANAG-UBAN BA???
Being a Bar topnotcher could be like
magic that can transform your life and your love-life to a more resplendent
level. And many, as enumerated in this article as Bar topnotchers, have become
great leaders of our country, like Don
Sergio Osmena of Cebu who became president when Pres. Manuel L. Quezon died and
did not finish his term, as well as Presidents
Manuel Roxas, Diosdado Macapagal, Ferdinand Marcos and Carlos P. Garcia. But being a Bar topnotcher
is not a guarantee that you can also
become an eloquent speaker too. There are many who did not top the Bar but are known of their eloquence as
good and fiery speakers. One of them is
Sen. Raul Manglapuz who confided with humility that he only got 75 percent when he took the Bar. Sen.
Gene Magsaysay, the younger brod of
Pres. Ramon "Monching" Magsaysay got 86 percent in the Bar but
comparing him with Sen. Manglapuz, if they are made to stand in the same stage
and asked to deliver a speech one after the other, I'm sure Manglapuz will
surely get a far greater number of thunderous applause over Gene Magsaysay. And
our very own Talyux Bacalso, who was elected to become one of our
Constitutional Delegates at the same time with former CJ Davide, was considered
our number Cebuano orator of his time even though he was only a barrister. And
even my son, lawyer James Lobedica, although he was like Sen. Manglapuz who was only able
to pass the Bar, is also a gifted speaker having won 3 consecutive years in our
town of Minglanilla in the 1980's as the acknowledged champion in
extemporaneous speech contests held and sponsored
by a youth organization. Even in his College of Law class in USC as a law
proper student, he also became a ruling champion in an extemporaneous speech
contest in their class where his college of law professor Gabby Ingles was one
of the 3 board of judges, that was years ago before Ingles became a Senior
Associate Justice in the Court of Appeals for the Visayas. Being a Bar
topnotcher and at the same time gifted with a talent as an eloquentspeaker is
something that is rare to find.
