Kaban ni D_BystandeR: PANAN-AW MAHITUNGOD SA MGA MAGBABALAOD SA DAKBAYAN SA SUGBO

An editorial appearing in The FREEMAN is a clear manifestation of a "down-to-earth" anti-Osmeña critic devoid of any sense of wisdom and public decorum. The "logic" which it seeks to propagate is that BOPK councilors who still comprise the majority in the lawmaking body of the Cebu City Council is shown and tempted to follow a path of ingratitude to relinquish their role in the opposition and to burn the bridges between them and Tommy O.

It based its logic in the premise that because Tommy lost in the last election his political leadership in BOPK should be dropped and ignored. In other words, this Freeman editorial smacks of any sense of decency and courts the opportunist nature of some politicians to disengage from the sound leadership of Tommy which the city residents have in several instances supported and acknowledged to have a clear vision of Cebu City's progress by heart as shown with the dramatic development the city has achieved during his years of sound leadership. There are several factors that influenced the result of an election and one of them is the news that Annabelle Rama who ran for a congressional seat in Cebu City's North District against Raul del Mar had contributed P3 million to Rama's political kitty in the last election in which Rama failed to reflect in his SECE (Statement of Election Contributions and Expenditures. The measly 6,000 votes majority that Rama got over Tommy O in the last mayoral battle in the city does not constitute a convincing margin to be used by BOPK councilors to be attracted to Rama's side. The best that they can do under the circumstances is to continue their role as the city's fiscalizer to guard the city's finances from unwarranted spending which usually come into play when the political leadership sees no control in the way he spends the city's wealth.
