Kaban ni D_BystandeR: PAGSUWAY SA PANGLABAN
I don't know what
compelling reason is there for Atty. Inocencio dela Cerna to accept this case
to act as legal counsel for these 4 HPG officers considered as suspects in the
heinous crime of murder for the death of a fellow lawyer and his compañero, Atty.
Noel Archival together with two of his close aides. Granting that he succeeds
in this case, did it not occur to him that it will signal the time that
lawyers' lives will just be easily snatched as easily as that because they
happened to cross the path of men in uniform in the pursuit of their chosen
profession as legal counsel of those whose rights were trampled upon for reason
driven by corruption in office and other forms of shenanigan?
What happened to Atty. Archival
could also happen to him and the time is getting closer if he is not trying to
be careful in accepting the kind of cases offered to him. This case of Atty. Archival
should have made the lawyers to close rank with each other for the their own
protection and for the continued patronage by the public of their own lofty
profession whose members will not be tempted with the glare of money when their
very existence and future is at stake.
It's a great insult and a
travesty of justice that the four cited Highway Patrol Group officers continued
to defy and disrespect the call from NBI 7 for them to appear in their Office
to explain their side in the brutal
slaying of Atty. Noel Archival together with two of his close aides last Feb.
18 in barangay Coro, Dalaguete, Cebu. Their assigned lawyer, Atty. Inocencio dela Cerna should have
declined himself to act as defense
counsel for the suspects in difference to the family of the victim, Atty. Archival, who is his companero
and a lawyer like him. If he does not want the same thing to happen to him, Atty.
Dela Cerna should better examine his conscience first. What looks preposterous
is the suspects' demand through their lawyer Atty. Dela Cerna that they be furnished
the detailed evidence making his clients as suspects. Did it occur to him that
answering those questions for his clients/suspects and asking the evidence for
them will enable them to prepare alibis to justify their denial in their
participation/commission of the crime?
Let your clients suffer the
corresponding consequences of their criminal acts which, in the first place,
negate the kind of work assignment they
occupy where they were supposed to uphold in accepting their sublime obligation
as defenders of the people's rights and to provide utmost protection of their
lives against criminals.
