Kaban ni D_BystandeR: NAHIMONG BIKTIMA ANG ASAWA SA ALKALDE

The common law wife of Pio V. Corpuz, Masbate town mayor Herminigildo "Minil" Betonio was killed by a gun for hire "Riding-In-Tandem" motorbike killers in Cebu City after disembarking from a ship owned by Lapulapu Shipping. Crisanta Lauron, the mayor's wife and 5-month pregnant together with the mayor's sister Leni Betonio-Eser, who is also a town councilor of PVC took a taxi ride from the pier to Talisay City but the taxi stopped at a traffic light in a corner V. Sotto and Osmena Blvd. It was  at this juncture when the motorcycle riding killers came by and pumped 4 shots to the taxi occupants hitting the mayor's wife in her breast piercing through her heart and another one in her nape the bullet exiting through her temple. She died on the spot. The mayor's sister was hit in her hand and survived the attack before  the taxi driver made a dashing speed to reach the hospital. In 2010, Betonio was elected Vice Mayor of PVC and he just took over the position of town mayor when the longtime elected Mayor Diomedes Amaroto Sr. resigned from his post for reason of poor health. Betonio's political opponent continued to question its legality.  His strong political opponent Governor Rizalina Seachon-Lanete insisted that she still has to accept Amaroto's resignation to make it valid. But the late DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo confirmed his position as PVC town mayor by operation of the law of succession when his oath of office was solemnized in the presence of Robredo. 

 In 2007 when Betonio ran for Vice Mayor in his town in PVC, two of his political leaders were killed by suspected political opponents. All in all, 15 lives were lost in his town in 2007  election due to politics. His acknowledged political opponent is the Lanete political dynasty headed by Masbate Governor Rizalina Seachon-Lanete whose two sons are currently serving elected positions as Placer Mayor Joshur Judd Lanete and Cong. Scott Davis Lanete of Masbate 3rd District. Betonio lamented that in 2007 the 9th Infantry Batallion was used as bodyguards by Lanete dynasty. Before the Cebu killing hundreds of firearms were confiscated in Masbate.
