I cannot understand why President Aquino III rejects the idea of declaring humanitarian crisis in Zamboanga City as requested by the city government officials to allow international donors to pour in funds for relief and rehabilitation in the aftermath of the three-week siege by Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels. And he would say there's no problem with the funding only that he wants a detailed plan how it is going to be applied.

Comparing the requested plan and the President's idea of how the government's assistance can be acquired would point out to a mountain of differences especially that based upon his previous reactions and responses, his treatment to our Muslim brothers is obviously wanting in sincerity to push through with the necessary help needed to alleviate the big humanitarian crisis as a result of his handling of the problem posed by the MNLF rebels. Months ago, when trouble erupted in North Borneo in connection with the "Sabah claim" of the heir to the Sultan of Sulu to regain ownership and control of same, and when Malaysian government forces routed the followers of the Sulu Sultan in a lopsided battle by using fighter planes and other weapons of destruction, the Aquino government was totally silent of the carnage made and instead ordered the Philippine Navy to put up a cordon of gunboats in coordination with Malaysian Navy to watch and intercept for the fleeing forces of the Sultan who wanted to save themselves from the scorching "fires of death." Those who were lucky to escape from "sure death" were intercepted just the same in the open sea by the Philippine Navy aboard their wooden boats numbering 38 of them and they were found trembling from hunger and fear but were just the same mercilessly charged in court with having committed "high crimes" and were incarcerated.

The recent result of fighting in Zamboanga City where massive use of government firepower was evident in its use of fighter planes against the MNLF rebels has netted the following list of results: 162 MNLF forces have been captured and 138 killed; in the government side: 19 soldiers and five policemen were killed and a total of 180 were wounded in the fighting. This result alone would tell us a lopsided battle in favor of the government. The UN Office for the coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated that at least 16,000 have been forced to evacuate from conflict-stricken barangays while a total of 136,000 people were affected by the violence. The European Union's delegation in Manila also condemned the conflict, noting its impact on civilians, especially women and children. "The European bloc called for the 'unconditional and immediate ending' of hostilities, the release of civilians still held hostage by the gunmen, and the safe access of humanitarian groups to those affected." "We further urged that all parties recommit irrevocably and exclusively to the political process and ongoing negotiations to ensure a lasting, just and peaceful settlement in Mindanao," the EU statement said.

Even if Pres. Aquino dislikes the Muslims but he cannot deny that they are still our brother Filipinos. And as the overall head of state, it is his solemn duty and obligation to care for those who are critically in need of help regardless of whether they involved Christians or Muslims alike.
