Sergio Oliva defected to the United States from Cuba during a bodybuilding competition in the early 1960s and went on to a storied career that saw him defeat icons of the sport including Arnold Schwarzenegger with a physique so incredibly massive and chiseled he was nicknamed "The Myth." 

 During much of his competitive career he was also a Chicago police officer, retiring about 10 years ago from the Rogers Park District. Mr. Oliva, 71, died Monday, Nov. 12, at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He had suffered from kidney problems.  Mr. Oliva defected from Cuba in 1963 during a Pan American Games qualifying competition in Jamaica, bringing the entire Cuban bodybuilding team with him.  He came to Chicago in 1963 because "he heard this was where the jobs were," longtime friend Jack Merjimekian said. Mr. Oliva studied English at Wells High School to qualify for citizenship and worked at the Duncan YMCA on the West Side after stints as a foundry worker and meatpacker. He started as a bodybuilder soon after coming to Chicago and began winning local titles. While working as a civilian physical instructor at the Chicago Police Academy, Mr. Oliva became interested in becoming an officer and got help from a police captain, Merjimekian said. Because of his physique - reported by the Tribune in 1986 as a 60-inch chest, 27-inch waist and 32-inch thighs - Mr. Oliva's police uniforms had to be specially made.  His titles included Mr. World at Montreal in 1966; Mr. Universe at Munich in 1967, 1968 and 1969; Mr. America in 1970; and Mr. Europe in 1981. He defeated Schwarzenegger in 1968 and 1969 in bodybuilding competitions, including Mr. Olympia. "He's the only guy who defeated Arnold in Mr. Olympia," Merjimekian said.  Schwarzenegger said on Twitter: "Oliva was one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time and a true friend. A fierce competitor with a big personality - one of a kind." 

Mr. Oliva survived a 1986 incident in which he was shot during a fight with his wife. He went back to work in the Rogers Park District until his retirement. Survivors include four daughters and a son.
