Kaban ni D_BystandeR: KASIKAS SA PAGPASIDUNGOG

Singer and former Councilor Anthony Castelo is at the center of a firestorm.   This after Castelo called on President Benigno Aquino III to abolish the National Artist Awards.  The popular singer and actor of the '70s made the call as he pointed out that the National Artist Awards has lost its credibility when the judges continue to leave out actor and Comedy King Dolphy for the awards.  Also left out was popular and award-winning and internationally recognized composer and former journalist George Canseco who was also a councilor of Quezon City like him.  Castelo said many other deserving Filipinos in the seven arts have never been duly recognized through the National Artist Awards which is administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

According to Castelo, the awards lacked transparency and have failed to truly recognize the best in Filipino artistry.  He said the NAA should be replaced instead with the  People's Artist Award.  "NAA has no credibility," Castelo stressed at a forum at Annabel's in Quezon City.  Castelo said he made his proposal in his letter to President Aquino on behalf of the Dakilang Lahi Foundation, a non-profit organization engaged in promoting positive Filipino values.  The singer aired his concern as prospects remain dim for Philippine comedy king  Dolphy to bag the award this year despite rising public clamor for him to be conferred the National Artist Award.  Dolphy was battling medical complications at Makati Medical Center after lording it over Philippine show business for more than 50 years as a comic artist.  His 'John en Marsha' television and movie series in the '70s and '80s are still among the most remembered local comedy shows.  Castelo lamented that NAA officials failed to recognize Dolphy's talent and contributions to the country.  "They're elitists and are insensitive to feelings of ordinary Filipinos who Dolphy entertained all these years," Castelo said.
