With the participation of fighter
planes and heavy shelling from Navy gunboats I wonder why no single civilian
hostage was reported killed in the government attacks which they claimed as
Bullets were labelled "to whom it
concerns" but of all wonders not even a single civilian hostage is
reported killed in that war. Could this be part of a "damage control"
scheme adapted by the administration to avoid howls of protest from anti-war
critics who protested against the "war-hawk" stance of the
administration who preferred to solve the problem with the use of the
"barrel of the gun" instead of talking peace with the proverbial use
of smoking it with "peace pipes" to avoid senseless loss of human
lives. And who will be made answerable to the resulting chaos and the billions
of pesos incurred as damage to the economy? Binay's original idea to exhaust
peace initiatives to save lives would have been the better choice but he had to
give up his plan to make way for Pres. Noynoy's "shortcut method" of relying too much with our
government's superior military firepower and Navy forces to quell the "irritants." Some of the terrified
civilian evacuees (there were more than 60 of them who reached their safe destination
in two days travel and composed mostly of minors) who have now reached Cebu City to escape the deadly
exchange of firepower between the warring forces. News about the deaths of two
infants - a two-month-old and a 4-month-old - inside the evacuation center in Zamboanga
City as narrated by personal testimony from one of the evacuees is a grim
reminder of how dreadful it is to live in that city nowadays. But Secretary
Gazmin has the "temerity" to declare the whole operation as "Mission
accomplished?!"
