A cockroach-eating contest at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee is being reviewed after reports that a man died after consuming roaches and worms in an unrelated Florida challenge.  The man died last week after consuming dozens of roaches and worms as part of a contest to win a python at a reptile store in Deerfield Beach, Florida, according to Reuters. 

In response, Six Flags Entertainment Corp. said it is reviewing whether to go ahead with a similar contest Friday. Katy Enrique, communications manager for Six Flags Great America, said early Tuesday afternoon that the contest had been canceled, but later in the day she said an official determination will be made later in the week.  "We are confident our eating contest are safe as the insects we use are raised specifically for human consumption," a statement from Six Flags Theme Parks reads. "Insects are considered a delicacy in many cultures; however, even though this appears to be an isolated incident, we are reviewing the eating contest at our parks to ensure we maintain a safe environment for our guest."  The contest have been held at the parks off and on since 2006 for "Fright Fest," a Halloween event that this year runs Sept. 29 to Oct. 28. 

The last contest in Gurnee was in 2011.  A Tribune story from last year quoted a park representative as saying the competition was "back by popular demand" and also quoted a Lake County Health Department official who advised against the eating of the insects due to health concerns. Great America held the same competition in 2008.  

A ruling on the cause of death in the Florida incident is pending an autopsy. Reuters reported that Richard  Archbold, 32, fell ill shortly after consuming dozens of roaches and worms Friday and was pronounced dead at a hospital. No other contestants reported medical problems after the competition, according to Reuters.
