Kaban ni D_BystandeR: MGA TALAGSAONG IRO

This heart-rending news about a stray dog found and rescued roaming aimlessly in Barangay San Isidro, Talisay City, with a large chunk of his nose, upper jaw and mouth dangling from his chin reminds me of a similar case where a dog from Zamboanga City was airlifted to Manila by concerned citizens identified as advocates for animal welfare for preparatory surgery and medical treatment before being finally transported to the US for further surgery and treatment by dog surgeons. It also gained prominence worldwide when his picture was posted in the internet and veterinary doctors handling the case disclosed they already received $10,000 as donation from animal lovers abroad but they are still expecting $10,000 more to complete the surgical cost and other related expenses. The previous case tells of a dog named "Kabang" who was reported to have just saved two young girls when he was hit by a speeding motorcycle that consequently cut his front nose as could be seen in that accompanying picture. The present case is about the dog named "Kenneth" (the local version of which is "kinit-an") was reportedly hacked by a still unidentified man sometime in the third week of September and few days later on September 29 he was seen roaming around and by luck was seen and taken cared of by a trisikad driver Roberto Solon. A nephew of his took picture of the dog and posted it online in the internet Facebook which drew the interest and concern of dog lovers abroad and according to a local group of dog lovers, the Cebu South Dog Club (CSDC) and the Island Rescue Organization (IRO) they are already able to raise at least $1,700 from donors abroad. The team that performeZialcita and Dr. Ivy Alvarez, with their assistants consisting of two nurses and five other veterinarians.

It took them 4 hours to operate and it was a successful one. The doctors were looking 70 to 80 percent functionality after recovery. Guilliam Roque of CSDC said that through Kenneth, they hope to remind the public of Rep. Act 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998. "This is also a chance to educate the public on the existence of RA 8485. People responsible for atrocities against animals are liable and can be imprisoned for up to two years or a fine of P1,000 or both, at the discretion of the court. Majority are unaware that such a law exists," he said.
