Kaban ni D_BystandeR: MADUNOT SA BILANGGOAN ANG WALAY NAHOT!!!

A man who is already at the doorstep of his twilight years is not supposed to spend his remaining time in jail especially if the infraction committed does not assume the gravity of a crime of murder or homicide, much less if it does not constitute any semblance of inflicting physical injury to the aggrieved.

What he needs is, yes, psychological counselling sessions to streamline his mental faculties to get along with his relatives in a friendly manner. At his age when he is already supposed to be planning  for his "final journey to the world beyond" the laws of the land should be tempered to his situation and should not be applied literally to exact punishment. Unless he has inflicted physical injuries to somebody or in this case to a relative, the court  should be kind enough and understanding to make his jail time shorter than the prescribed term of more than two years. If the soldiers who were convicted in the murder of Ninoy Aquino at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport (now called NAIA  in his honor) in his return to the Philippines in the 80’s were released from jail when they reached the mandatory age of 70, I find it hard to reconcile why this old man, at 84, was still subjected to a "long" prison term of more than two years when what he was found guilty of is to harass a relative. Sometimes, poverty could be considered a culprit why the poor easily gets a jail sentence from a court compared to the rich and influentially powerful.

Footnote: Mariano Molina, 84, a new inmate of Baguio City Jail is serving a prison term of more than two years for a grave coercion conviction in February. He has turned to prayers while spending time in prison. A resident of Barangay (village) Sto. Rosario, Baguio City, Molina was convicted by Municipal Trial Court on February 27 for harassing a relative. He was sentenced to spend time in jail until June 27, 2015. Molina professed innocence and has appealed to be released as soon as possible so he could see his wife and eight children. "I feel sad that I have to be in prison in my old age. Fathers are supposed to be with their families," Molina said.
