His good personality trait came out into the open only at the time of his death in line of duty. PO2 Gerlito Estremos who joined the police force after graduating  a course in criminology at University of Cebu in 2006 was married to Elmera where they have 6 children, the eldest at 12 and the youngest at 2. He was assigned  to Alcoy Police Station after his assignment in Cebu  City where he was detailed at Crime Scene Investigation of Cebu Provincial Office and Scene of the Crime  Operatives of Cebu City Police Office.

It was there in  his assignment in Alcoy where he was suspended along with three others as they were accused of illegal arrest as an offshoot of a case filed by a man against his neighbor for stealing a goat. It was not clear how the decision to  suspend him came about for he was not even notified about his suspension by the Police Regional Office-7 in March that according to his wife her husband kept on working. His wife said her husband did not receive his midyear bonus. A a result their power in their house was cut-off and they could not even buy school supplies for their children last month for the school opening. But the wife said her husband was work-oriented that he kept on doing his job believing that someday he will find better treatment from his higher ups. He was reportedly manhandled by two men he suspected of stealing his helmet where a heated argument first erupted between him and the two men in the other motorcycle. He was outfought by the two since his police buddy PO1 Brando Nacario who was supposed to be with him in that night's assignment left him at 12:05am, Saturday, to go back to Fuente Police Station for an unknown reason. A crash helmet nowadays would cost you P2,800. He twice lost his helmet to a gang of thieves specializing on helmets that's why he was deadly serious to apprehend the two men but instead they outfought him and used his own firearm to beat him before he was finally shot in the face where he died. Two men, a security guard of nearby Sto. Rosario Church and a taxi driver witnessed the incident when he was killed.

That man Gerlito, a dedicated police officer out to catch the helmet thieves lost his life in the process. He died with a heavy heart knowing his family was suffering from the financial difficulties as a result of his suspension where he did not even receive his midyear bonus.
