Kaban ni D_BystandeR: SINUKLIAY SA HUNAHUNA

Pleasantly surprised to have a late response to my long time
post. Thanks, D-BystandeR. Your speculation, after the fact, that Erap "acceded to the
idea of being convicted" is however not quite credible, to put it mildly,
something like "pinagbigyan na lamang kita para wala nang gulo." Even
GMA's pardon may have been negotiated beneath the glare of the media, who
knows, we may yet to know inside stories years later. A lot of politicians have
underestimated Erap from the time he ran as mayor of San
Juan. He rose in stature and power due to the poor
man's vote, and I couldn't begrudge him that. Even I gave him the benefit of the doubt and hoped that he would be
a great leader to pull up the Philippines
after the push that president Fidel Ramos gave the country on the economic
front. But no. Like Marcos before him, his moral depravity did him in. There
have been leaders that were given the rare chance by history to make a great
country out of ours: Marcos, Estrada and Macapagal-Arroyo. Sadly, their lack of
integrity eventually pulled them down as spectacularly as they rose in power.
Yet they still have diehard supporters. A pity. One of history's strongman that
I have come to admire is Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore. His incorruptibility, his
strong leadership and his clear vision for his country is unparalleled in the
history of many great leaders. Our leaders should learn from him.

I admire your honest appreciation of facts surrounding the legendary popularity of Erap. His plunder case, to my mind, is something that only prospered because Erap sensing that GMA's obsession was to muddle his name and reputation, acceded to the idea of being convicted with that crime. He could have valiantly put up a strong and convincing legal defense but Erap was "bright enough" to understand that the cards are heavily stacked against him. And I think Erap has the "inner feeling in him" that once he is convicted GMA will pardon him. And this story in the life of Erap has reopened his "lost" greatness to the masses when Cory, the famed democratic icon, offered her apology to Erap that she made a mistake for joining that highly "planned usurpation" of his presidency by GMA. And that eve...
