In 1997, Thomas N. Tait headed overseas with one important mission in mind - to find himself a bride.  His travel would take him to the Philippines, where in October of that same year, at a burger shop in Legazpi during the city's yearly Ibalong Festival, he would meet his future wife, Karen Santillan was just a teen at the time and almost 20 years Tait's junior.  Despite a language barrier - he couldn't speak the native Tagalog and she got by with broken English - the young girl would marry Tait a year later,  according to Alyssa Campbell, a Waynesboro detective. Campbell would end up pursuing Tait for 23 months in a two-pronged investigation that would result in murder and child porn charges against Tait.  Karen's parents, poor and with limited means, were elated at the prospect of their youngest daughter marrying a westerner, Campbell said. It was thought she was well on her way to a better life in the United States.  Within five years of meeting Thomas Tait, a Waynesboro man with a seemingly insatiable appetite for child pornography, Karen Santillan would be dead. Her badly decomposed body was found in 2002 in West Virginia's Greenbrier State Forest, just across the Virginia State line near Interstate 64. She would remain an unidentified Jane Doe for the next 10 years. Authorities shut the door behind Thomas Tait, now 52.

On Feb. 11, he pleaded guilty in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, to second degree murder in the 2002 slaying of his wife. He was given a 30-year prison term, but because West Virginia has parole he could have been eligible for release in 10 years.  On Feb. 14 in Waynesboro Circuit Court, Tait was sentenced to 30 years in prison on 20 counts of possessing child pornography, which will run concurrently with the West Virginia sentence. Virginia abolished parole in 1995, ensuring that Tait will be  a minimum of 77 years old when, and if, he walks out of Virginia prison.
